Instagram Images, Videos, and Stories Size Guide & Infographics — 2022 Update
Instagram media dimensions change all the time. Below are the latest Instagram image, videos, and stories dimensions, as of 2022.
Instagram Image Sizes
Before we begin, here’s something to keep in mind when making a photo and uploading it on Instagram: aspect ratio.
Aspect ratio is a metric that relates to the size of a video or image on a screen. Aspect ratios are displayed as width and height numbers. For instance, an aspect ratio of 1:1 is used to describe a square.
Instagram supports and displays many different image aspect ratios and dimensions, making it quite tricky to always be in the loop.
Follow these guidelines to make sure your image content looks at its best on Instagram.
Instagram Profile Photo Dimensions
320 x 320 pixels
Instagram profile photos are 110 x 100 pixels, but the platform stores these images at 320 x 320 pixels, so you should upload an image at least this large.
Tip: Instagram profile photos are circles, so make sure all the elements you want to show are centred; otherwise, they’ll be cropped out.
Instagram Feed Photos Dimensions
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels, aspect ratio 1.91:1
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels, aspect ratio 4:5
- Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels, aspect ratio 1:1
Instagram carousel image sizes are the same as regular feed images:
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels, aspect ratio 1.91:1
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels, aspect ratio 4:5
- Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels, aspect ratio 1:1
Best Practices
- If you want your images to look appealing on Instagram, upload a 1080 pixels wide image.
- If you upload an image with a resolution lower than 320 pixels, Instagram will size it up to 320 pixels.
- If you share an Instagram image larger than 1080 pixels, Instagram will size it down to 1080 pixels.
- If you share a photo 320 to 1080px wide and aspect ratio between 1.91.1 and 4:5, Instagram won’t change its original resolution.
- If you upload an Instagram image with a different ratio, the platform will automatically crop it.
Instagram Stories Size
1080 x 1920 pixels
The preferred aspect ratio is 9:16.
If you don’t use this ratio, the story might look cropped out, zoomed, or with wide areas of the screen blank.
Instagram Ads Image Sizes
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels
- Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
- Minimum width: 320 pixels
- Maximum width: 1080 pixels
- Supported aspect ratios: Anywhere between 1.91:1 and 4:5
Image sizes for Instagram Stories ads
1080 x 1920 pixels
Instagram recommends leaving roughly ‘14% of the top and bottom of the image free from text and logos’ to prevent them from being covered.
Starting September 2020, Facebook and Instagram ads are no longer penalised if more than 20% of the ad space is text.
Instagram Video Size
Feed Video Dimensions
The most common form of video you see on Instagram is Feed videos. There are 15-second to 1-minute long clips you can find in your feeds with two formats of such videos supported by Instagram — portrait and landscape.
Recommended dimensions:
- Aspect ratio of 1.91:1 with dimensions 1080 x 608px
- Aspect ratio of 4:5 with dimensions 1080 x 1350px
Instagram Reels Dimensions
1080 x 1920 pixels
- Aspect ratio of 9:16.
- Cover photo: 1080 x 1920 pixels
Remember that Reels are cropped to a 1:1 image in your profile feed and a 4:5 image in the home feed.
IGTV Dimensions
1080 x 1920 pixels

10-minute long and shorter IGTV videos can’t exceed 650MB in size. The maximum file size of hour-long videos is 3.6GB.
